Position Objectives:
See attached EMR Position Description.Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to calls and render emergency medical care to adults, children and infants based on assessment findings and provide patients with protection when preparing them for transport, including motor vehicle accidents.
- Report to the responding EMS unit, emergency department or the communications center the nature and extent of injuries, the number of patients, and the condition of each patient.
- Perform EMS, or other emergency services as directed and assist in performing appropriate rescue techniques.
- In the absence of law enforcement, maintain a safe and secure environment.
- Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner, observing traffic regulations concerning emergency vehicle operation.
- Maintain emergency equipment and vehicles in a clean, efficient, and orderly operating condition.
- Restock supplies and follow appropriate disinfecting procedures for vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain Data privacy as required by the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.
- Attend continuing education and refresher education programs as required by employer, medical control, and licensing or certifying agencies.
- Attend Fire Department training sessions and meetings as directed.
- Maintain and clean the fire station and equipment as directed.
- Present a positive and constructive attitude in the performance of all duties.
- Strive to maintain morale within the department and working relations with other agencies.
- Report to the Chief and/or Assistant Chiefs or designees on all matters related to this position.
- Accept specific responsibilities as assigned by the Chief and/or Assistant Chiefs or designees.
- Perform operations and administrative functions as directed.
- Follow department direction relating to equipment operation, department policies and operational guidelines.
- Must attend training sessions as directed, including OSHA / Right-to-Know training(s) and continuing education to maintain EMR certification.
- Must attend 10% of the total calls.
- Preferred attendance at monthly Fire Department business meeting.
Minimum Requirements:
- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid Minnesota State Driver’s License (Class D).
- Positive driving record.
- Passage of approved Emergency Medical Responder course and attain certification within one (1) year of hire date.
- CPR Certification
- Passage of medical examination.
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Pass a Minnesota State Drug and Alcohol test.
- Passage of successful background investigation.
- Reside or work in a location that allows for an eight (8) minute response time to the Fire Station.
- Meet the minimum position requirements of a First Responder.
Desirable Training and Experience:
- Ability to function in uncommon situations.
- Ability to quickly assess injuries, determine method(s) of treatment, provide basic medical and advanced first aid care, and provide immediate lifesaving interventions while waiting for other EMS resources to arrive.
- Possess an understanding of basic medical-legal principles.
- Possess a basic understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal wellbeing.
- Ability to function within the scope of care as defined by state, regional, and local regulatory agencies.
- Ability to perform essential functions during required hours of the position.
- Ability to work outside of normal working hours on an on-call basis as the needs of the City requires.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in oral and written formats.
- Possess effective problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to concentrate and use reasoning and good judgment.
- Ability to establish and achieve priorities in the work environment and delegate responsibility when appropriate.
- Must be able to socially, physically, and mentally perform all essential functions of the position in the working conditions described above.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective relationships with other volunteer members, the Officers, the City Council, the City Administrator, City staff, the public, the media, and other governmental agencies.
- Considerable knowledge of equipment, tools, methods, operations, and materials used as a First Responder.
- Considerable ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the general public, media, regulatory agencies, elected officials, department staff, and other City staff.
- Considerable ability to organize, plan and direct the work of others.
- Working ability to operate a telephone, radio and computer.
- Working ability to hear alarms and mechanical malfunctions.
- Working ability to effectively read, write and speak the English language to communicate with other volunteer members and the public.
- Working ability to maintain equipment and vehicles, record information, and to develop and maintain a preventative maintenance program.
- Working ability to work with exposure to infectious diseases.
